Frugalicious Friday: haircuts

My frugal friend Gillian has started a wonderful part of her blog called Frugalicious Fridays.  Anybody know how to have a link-up party so we can all post our frugal tips together?  Because she and I have no clue.  Either way, I’m a big fan of alliteration, so I’ll be tagging her on Facebook and linking to her blog so you can see how she saves money.  She and her husband are Dave Ramsey graduates as well, and I love how real she is – whether she’s saving money or not!

So Gillian, this one is for you – there’s about to be 3 (little) girls in the Grubbs Household, and if they follow in their mother’s footsteps, that’s going to equal a lot of clogged drains and hairy hairbrushes.  I cringed a little bit (or a lot) when I watched Kennedy’s first haircut in the “salon” and had to pay $25 for it.  Yikes!  So, we took the haircutting scissors we bought to use for Colby, and Kevin cut straight across.

Before:

After:

Such a great job! I estimate he cut about 4 inches off, which has really made a difference because now Kennedy is able to brush through her own hair without so many tangles.

We already cut Colby’s hair with our own set of $40 clippers, which Kevin bought 10 years ago in college.  And Kevin cuts his own hair too.

All in all, let’s say:
Kevin’s haircut = 3x/month = 3 x 12= 36 x $15 per haircut =  $540 per year
Colby’s haircut = 1x/month = 1 x 12 = 12 x $10 per haircut = $120 per year
Kennedy’s haircut = not per month, but ~6x/year = 6 x $25 per haircut = $150 per year

That is a total savings of $810.  I can really get excited about that.

What are your secrets to saving money?  I hope to be posting more tips in future Fridays, and I’d love to link your frugal tips.

My trip(s) to Walgreens last week.

I made a few trips to Walgreens last week – there seems to be one one every corner in this town, and not every one had the pads that were free after RR.  I figured I’d stock up for when Baby Lightning Jesus (or whatever her name is) gets here.

I spent a little over $3 out of pocket for all of these items, and I still have $2 RR left over.  My kids were excited about the gummi worms, and I loved that they were free!

(Anybody else besides Tiffany get paid for the Brita pitcher?  By Friday, I couldn’t find one.  Carlee also pulled the [empty] shopping cart over on top of her, so I was a little distracted that day.)

Jenna. Nov 2. Couponing Attempt #8.

I went to CVS today.  And I bought:
- 2 Maxwell House cans of coffee
- 2 Oral-B power toothbrushes
- 1 CVS toothbrush

Total value = $28.12

81.9% savings.

PS – I bought some band-aids at Target for 82 cents per box (after coupon).  The kids are getting band-aids and these toothbrushes in their stockings for Christmas.  Since it seems as if the kids like to use band-aids like stickers and toothbrushes almost as fast…

Jenna. Sep 27. Couponing Attempt #7.

All the Kroger’s in the BCS area ran Super Doubles this week, which means all coupons $1 and less were doubled.  For me, it meant I got to take a lot of items out of the store for free or better than free.  Here are my receipts – I had to do 2 transactions because I could only have one like coupon.  I shopped late tonight – probably got there at 10 pm and left around 11.  The college girls at the checkout line were amazed at how much I saved so late at night.

Still not sure why I got charged the 2% phonecard fee…?

PS – This morning I learned that my Grandfather passed away late last night.   Today was a long day – besides, you know, keeping a “normal” schedule for the kids, I spent time writing his obituary, meeting with my parents aunt grandmother & pastor to discuss the funeral service, and overall mourning his passing.  Eventually I want to write some of the great things about my grandfather but I did want you all to know what’s been consuming a lot of my thoughts lately.

I had already well-planned this trip to Kroger’s but it sure was hard dragging myself out of the house to do it.

Yoplait Splitz Review & Giveaway

MyBlogSpark gave me the opportunity to try one of Yoplait’s newest creations.  Yoplait Splitz is available in 3 different flavors – Rainbow Sherbet, Strawberry Banana Split, & Strawberry Sundae.  When I redeemed my coupon, all that was left at the store was Rainbow Sherbet, and I have to say I wasn’t totally thrilled with it.  However, given the assumed popularity of the other 2 flavors, I’d love to be able to try them if they were in stock.  Even though Rainbow Sherbet was too sweet for my taste, the kids and I did like having a fun snack together.

I am excited to be able to give away a prize package from Yoplait through MyBlogSpark – a coupon for a free package of Yoplait Splitz, an insulated tote bag, & a roll up fleece picnic blanket.

Would you like to win this prize package?  Leave a comment by this Friday, September 10th, with your name, email address, & the flavor of Yoplait Splitz you’d most like to try.  I’ll pick a winner at random early Saturday morning, so you have a little over 48 hours to enter.

Disclaimer:  MyBlogSpark provided me this prize package for review and promotion, but I have not been compensated.  All opinions are 100% mine.

Jenna. Jul 27. Millions of Peaches.

This is what you do when peaches are on sale for 88 cents a pound.  You buy as many as will fit into a plastic bag.  I bought 8.73 pounds and wish I had bought more.  You see, they freeze well for smoothies.  And, the Germans tried to get the kids to say Pfirsich.  [And I'd like to hear you try.]

Jenna. Jul 16. Houston Zoo.

Alicia and I talked about taking a trip to the Houston Zoo on one of the 2 days she had a break from school.  We decided on today, Kevin took off from work, and I learned just last week that today was also one of the zoo’s Free Days.  So, I unexpectedly saved our family about $50 in admission costs.  :)

Now time for the pictures.  Most were taken on our air-conditioned picnic in the backseat of our van.  (It was so hot outside; we drained all of our water pretty early and then refilled in the water fountain.)

Otherwise the pictures are pretty self-explanatory, if you’ve ever been to a zoo.

(This one of Carlee is kind of funny – Carlee was talking to and trying to hug this picture of a rhino, and then when I wanted to take her pic, she started running away from it.)

Jenna. Jun 2. Pockorn.

The kids and I went to the Summer Movie Clubhouse at Cinemark today.  We watched Madagascar 2.  I bought passes for $5 each, so we’ll see 10 movies for that price.  (Although, I’m kind of ticked that I had to pay for Carlee, since she’s not even occupying a seat.)

On the right is the large popcorn tub.  On the left is a gallon ziploc bag of 2/3 of the contents of the large popcorn tub.   I spent $6.50 on the popcorn, which was refilled once.  Now we’ll eat the leftovers for the rest of the week for snack.

I’m just wondering if I should spend the $6.50 every week, or if I should pack other snacks instead?  Is it worth the $?

[PS - Kennedy calls it "pockorn".  Carlee calls it "poporn".  Colby calls it "mmmm".]

Jenna. May 13. C.I.A.

Colby took this picture of me, “Couponing In Action”.  Here I’m taking the old Q’s and taking out the ones that are about to expire.  You like my coupon box?  It’s a re-purposed photo box, complete with the tabs for organizing.
