I took this pic and wrote the story on Day 4 for my church’s MOPS [Mothers of Preschoolers] newsletter.
Stuck on You. And You. And You too.
My great friend Amanda K. invited a bunch of moms with their kids to her house for a craft playdate before Christmas. She had in mind to make salt dough and put our kids’ hand prints in the dough with their name and date written in Sharpie. I loved the idea and couldn’t wait to get there.
Amanda had about 20 kids + moms participating in the craft. Being the only Mom of 3 there, my kids immediately scattered when we walked in the door, which is completely normal. It took me a little while to round them all up, so Amanda waited to do my kids’ handprints until after all the other kids had done theirs. She decided to put all 3 kids on the same piece of dough – their hands were so cute together!
She gave each of the other moms a paper plate with their kids’ handprint in the dough and instructions to bake the dough on an oven-safe dish for 2 hours at 250 degrees. But since my 3 kids were all on the same piece of dough, Amanda said, “Here, take this casserole dish of mine; I don’t have paper plates big enough to give you.” She slid the dough on to the dish. I told her I’d return the dish the next day, since I’d be in her area again.
Once we got home, I immediately baked it. It looked so great! I was so excited to show my husband when he got home. But, when the 2 hours + cooling time had passed, I tried to get the artful masterpiece off the casserole dish and it was completely stuck! I couldn’t believe it. If I tried to chip away the dough, the art would break but save the dish. If I saved the artwork, I’d owe Amanda a new casserole dish.
So, I told Amanda I completely forgot to put any sort of nonstick cooking spray on the bottom of the dish when I cooked it, and that I was so sorry but she’d be down one dish. I told her that the glass actually made a really cute frame for the artwork and next time we should have every mom bring an old dish to use for a handprint craft. It now sits on top of my oven and hasn’t moved – the dish OR the dough.
