The “Lell-a” Conspiracy

So even before Colby has been able to talk, he has been saying his name… well, sort of. He calls himself “Lell-a” mainly because when he was very little I used to make faces at him by sticking in and out my tongue and making kind of a lell-o-lell-o-lell-o sound; Colby would mimic it. So I would say to him, “What does Colby say?” and he would do this thing with his tongue.
So since then he has called himself, “Lell-a”. Even when we try to train him to say “Col” and then “bee” and then “Colby”, he would always repeat back “Lell-a” to us. Well I finally decided I better catch this on tape before he started saying it properly.

And sure enough… this was the last time it appears that he will say it the old “Lell-a” way… in fact… check out this next video. He has never said his name before today and now he’s just crazy with it!

Cute videos! I love the triumphant way he shouts “COLBY!” on the second one. Too great!
I’m also really digging the videos. Can you guys tell me how to do those? I think the future grandparents will really like them, too. Thanks!

Glad you liked them… here’s a quick tutorial and links to stuff I used to create them.
1) First of all, you have to create the videos… you could use a regular video camera and rip the videos to your hard drive, but that’s too much work. We just use the compact digital camera I bought Jenna because it records great little Windows AVI files at 640×480 and that is plenty good for these little web videos. Here’s the link to the camera we have:

2) Next, obviously you have to get these videos to your computer.. I leave this as an exercise for the reader. You may or may not have to consult your camera manual.
3) After that, I am converting my videos to FLV, which is Flash Video. I use this nifty free tool: Riva FLV Encoder. Be sure to change the output size to 320×240 (unless you want a big video).
4) Upload your video… there are various ways to do this (FTP, WordPress upload, etc), but I’ll leave this to you… hopefully you know how.
5) Then I have the Flash Video Player Plugin for WordPress. I have customized mine slightly to allow me to put the preview image in there… otherwise it just shows black. I can send you my plugin, or maybe I will pass on my changes to the guy who wrote it. Just follow the instructions on his blog on how to insert the video into your post.
And that’s it! Wow… maybe I should convert this comment to a blog entry. I think I’ll do that.

I haven’t ever seen South Park other than when Rebekah made me watch it freshman year, and neither has my friend Sarah but when I showed her this video of Colby saying his name, she said it reminded her of this character Timmy that someone had shown her once on there. He just sits there and says his own name. And that’s it. I managed to find a montage video of it. They are similar…
